Does Bluetooth drain battery? The real answer

In one 2020 Android Authority test of five phones over 26 hours, leaving Bluetooth on used 1.8% more battery on average. Results vary by phone, accessory, signal, and use.

Leaving Bluetooth enabled is not battery-free, but there is no universal idle-drain percentage for every Android phone. The result depends on the device, accessories, scanning, apps, audio use, and test conditions.

What the 26-hour result actually shows

Android Authority’s disclosed test compared five phones over a 26-hour “typical day” and reported 1.8% more battery use with Bluetooth enabled. That figure belongs to that test and those phones. It is useful evidence that the idle difference can be small, not a promise that every phone will differ by exactly 1.8%.

Idle Bluetooth and active use are different

Android’s Bluetooth Low Energy overview describes BLE as intended for lower power than classic Bluetooth. It does not establish the total daily battery cost of leaving the main toggle on.

An idle radio, an active audio stream, a wearable syncing, and repeated background scans are different workloads. Accessory firmware and companion apps can also wake the phone, so a Bluetooth-related drain may not come from the radio alone.

When to turn it off

Leave Bluetooth on when you use earbuds, a watch, a car system, a keyboard, a tracker, or hearing devices. Turn it off temporarily when troubleshooting, when you will not use it, or when you need to minimize every avoidable load.

If standby drain is abnormal, compare several similar periods with and without the same accessory. Check Android’s battery-use screen and location-related Bluetooth scanning. A 20% overnight loss should be investigated; the 1.8% test does not prove Bluetooth is innocent on every device.

Practical answer

For many modern phones, idle Bluetooth is a small part of total daily use. Active accessories, audio, scanning, signal conditions, and apps can change that. Use the published test as a measured example and your own repeatable comparison for your phone.
