Most Android diagnostic apps aren’t really diagnostic apps. They’re battery widgets, spec sheets, ad funnels, or old “phone cleaner” apps with a health score bolted on top.

The better ones are more honest. AccuBattery tracks battery behavior over time. DevCheck and AIDA64 show hardware details. Phone Doctor Plus runs hands-on component tests. runcheck looks at device health across battery, thermal, network, and storage instead of treating one number as the whole story.

Android 17 is now rolling out to supported Pixel phones first, with other brands following their own schedules. That matters because built-in diagnostics still vary a lot by device. A Pixel 8a or newer can show battery health and cycle information in Settings, while a mid-range phone from another OEM may expose almost nothing beyond temperature and charge level.

AccuBattery

AccuBattery is the battery app in this group. It estimates remaining capacity in mAh by watching charge sessions, then compares that estimate with the battery’s design capacity. The longer it runs, the more useful the estimate becomes.

That last part matters. You don’t install AccuBattery, charge for ten minutes, and suddenly know your real battery health. It needs several charge sessions because the app is building a model from what the phone reports during charging. Those current readings come from Android’s battery APIs and the device’s fuel gauge. Some phones expose clean data. Some round it. Some report values that move around enough to make the estimate noisy.

AccuBattery also tracks charge rate, discharge rate, screen-on and screen-off drain, deep sleep, and charging session wear. The 80% charge alarm is still one of its most practical features. It doesn’t magically protect the battery, but it reminds you to avoid keeping the phone full and warm for hours.

The Pro upgrade is a one-time in-app purchase in most regions. It removes ads and unlocks older history. I wouldn’t buy it on day one. Use the free version for a week, see whether the numbers settle, then decide.

Where AccuBattery falls short is simple: it doesn’t tell you much about the rest of the phone. Thermal behavior outside basic battery temperature, storage pressure, signal quality, and hardware identity are not its job.

DevCheck

DevCheck is the best fit when you want to know what the phone is doing right now. It shows CPU and SoC details, per-core frequencies, GPU information, RAM, storage, display specs, camera sensor details, sensors, operating system information, Wi-Fi, cellular data, battery voltage, current, temperature, and power draw.

It also supports root and Shizuku for extra system information on compatible devices. That gives power users more visibility without turning the app into a root-only tool.

The free version is useful by itself. The Pro upgrade adds tests, benchmarking, widgets, floating monitors, and battery monitoring features. The exact price can vary by region, so don’t trust old screenshots when checking cost.

DevCheck’s weakness is interpretation. It will show you -78 dBm, 39.8°C, and a live CPU frequency graph. It won’t always explain whether that combination matters. DevCheck is excellent for people who are comfortable reading raw numbers. For a plain answer to “is this phone healthy?”, it is not the cleanest choice.

AIDA64

AIDA64 is a system information dump in app form. That sounds unkind, but it is also the reason people use it. The Android version comes from the same family as the long-running Windows hardware tool, and it lists a lot: CPU identification, clocks, GPU and OpenGL information, memory, storage, screen density, sensors, codecs, operating system details, and system directories.

I like AIDA64 for quick verification. If a seller says a phone has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and 12 GB of RAM, AIDA64 can help confirm that before you go any further. It is less useful as an everyday health monitor because it mostly reports what Android exposes. There is no real “here’s the problem” layer.

Use it when you need specs. Don’t expect coaching.

CPU-Z

CPU-Z is lighter than DevCheck and AIDA64. It identifies the processor, shows core frequencies, reports RAM, and includes basic battery and sensor information. The Android app follows the same idea as CPU-Z on desktop: open it, check the hardware, leave.

That makes it useful for a quick second opinion. It is not a trend tracker, battery health monitor, network tool, or storage diagnostic app. CPU-Z answers “what is inside this phone?” and mostly stops there.

Device Info HW

Device Info HW goes after component-level detection. On supported phones it can identify things like the LCD panel, touchscreen controller, camera sensors, memory, NFC, charger hardware, Wi-Fi, and battery-related components. That can be useful for developers, repair-minded users, and people trying to verify a model more deeply than the normal Settings app allows.

The catch is Android’s access model. Newer Android versions and newer devices block more low-level hardware information than older ones. Its own description notes that recent devices can block some reads, and root access can expose more. So the app can be impressive on one phone and oddly incomplete on another.

It can export HTML and PDF reports, which helps when documenting a device before resale or repair. Just don’t assume every component field will appear on Android 17 phones.

Phone Doctor Plus and TestM-style hardware tests

Spec apps tell you what the phone claims to have. Guided test apps tell you whether parts actually respond.

Phone Doctor Plus runs more than 40 hardware and system diagnostics, including screen, speaker, microphone, camera, sensor, memory, storage, network, and battery checks. TestM, where available, follows a similar idea by walking you through hardware checks and producing a condition report for buying or selling.

These apps need your participation. You tap screen zones, speak into the microphone, cover the proximity sensor, switch cameras, and confirm whether sound comes out of the speaker. That is slower than opening DevCheck, but it catches problems a spec sheet won’t catch.

For a used phone inspection, this category matters more than most people think.

runcheck

runcheck is built around a different question: what is the phone’s overall condition right now?

It combines battery, thermal, network, and storage into a weighted health score. Battery carries 40% of the score, thermal and network carry 25% each, and storage carries 10%. That weighting makes sense. A dying battery or a phone that keeps overheating affects daily use more than a storage warning at 72% full.

The useful part is not just the score. runcheck also labels measurement confidence. Battery current is a good example. Android exposes instantaneous current in microamps through BatteryManager, but real-world devices don’t all report it with the same quality. Some values are accurate. Some are estimated. Some are unavailable. runcheck shows that instead of pretending every number is equally trustworthy.

Which app answers which question?

For battery capacity loss, start with AccuBattery, but give it time. On Pixel 8a and later, also check Settings > Battery > Battery health and Settings > About phone > Battery information. Those built-in Pixel pages can be more useful than a third-party estimate when the device supports them.

For exact hardware identity, use DevCheck or AIDA64. DevCheck is easier to live with. AIDA64 is a good dense reference.

For used-phone hardware checks, use a guided test app such as Phone Doctor Plus. A spec sheet cannot tell you whether the earpiece crackles, whether touch fails near the edge, or whether autofocus hunts forever.
