5G vs 4G: speed, battery, and coverage compared
5G isn't automatically the better choice every minute of the day. When coverage is strong, it can be much faster than 4G and a little more responsive. When coverage is weak, it can drain more battery, fall back constantly, and feel no better than LTE.
5G and 4G cannot be compared with one fixed speed, latency, battery, or coverage number. Results depend on spectrum, network architecture, device, modem, carrier, place, time, signal, server, and workload. The previous universal-looking figures have been removed.
Speed
The GSMA spectrum position describes low band as a coverage layer and explains the different roles of mid and higher bands. That supports qualitative differences between deployments, not fixed consumer speeds.
Measure the connection you actually use. Measurement Lab’s NDT7 is one documented measurement protocol, but a single test is still only a snapshot of that route and moment.
Latency
5G can provide lower latency in suitable deployments, especially where the radio and core network support it. Server distance, congestion, routing, Wi-Fi or cellular transitions, and application design can dominate the result. The former fixed millisecond comparison was not supported and has been removed.
Compare repeated tests against the same service. Do not infer application responsiveness from the 5G icon.
Battery consumption
A 2020 study of first-generation commercial 5G measured higher radio power than 4G in its tested devices and networks. It does not establish one current percentage for all phones.
Non-Standalone or Standalone operation, modem design, signal, band, traffic, and firmware can change consumption. Use several similar days on your own device if you are deciding between automatic 5G and LTE.
Coverage and signal
Android’s SignalStrength documentation defines how software reports signal levels; it does not prove speed, latency, battery life, or coverage. Low band can provide a broad 5G layer, while higher bands serve different capacity and coverage goals. Actual indoor and rural results remain carrier- and location-specific.
A stable 4G connection can be more useful than unstable 5G. A stable 5G connection can be much faster than local 4G. Neither outcome is universal.
Practical comparison
Keep automatic network selection when performance and battery life are acceptable. Try LTE temporarily when 5G is unstable, slower in the place you use it, or when a repeatable comparison shows a meaningful battery benefit. Menu availability varies by phone, carrier, region, and firmware.
Judge speed, latency, battery, coverage, and signal separately. No single source or status-bar label proves all five.
