How to fix Bluetooth connection problems on Android
Practical fixes for Android Bluetooth problems, including pairing failures, audio dropouts, car audio issues, and problems after Android updates.
You’re trying to pair earbuds, a watch, a speaker, or your car, and Android either doesn’t see it or says it’s connected while nothing works. Bluetooth is like that. It works quietly for months, then one saved pairing gets weird and the whole thing feels broken.
Start with the simple checks before digging into settings. Most Bluetooth failures are not deep Android problems. They’re stale pairings, low accessory batteries, distance, interference, or an accessory that isn’t really in pairing mode.
Start with the boring checks
Make sure the accessory has enough charge. Some earbuds and speakers behave strangely when the case or headset battery is low, even if the LED still turns on.
Then confirm pairing mode. This is the part people skip. A Bluetooth accessory that is already paired to a laptop, tablet, or old phone may not accept a new phone until you force it into pairing mode. Usually that means holding the power, Bluetooth, or case button until the light flashes. The exact pattern depends on the device.
Distance matters too, but don’t trust the marketing number on the box. Bluetooth range depends on antenna design, output power, walls, bodies, and 2.4 GHz interference. Headphones that work across a room may fail through two concrete walls. Cars are another good example: the phone can be only a few meters away and still drop audio if it sits in a pocket, bag, or wireless charging tray that shields the signal.
Forget the device and pair it again
This is still the fix I would try first for one broken accessory.
On most Android phones, go to Settings > Connected devices. Tap the gear icon next to the Bluetooth device and choose Forget or Unpair. On Samsung, the path is usually Settings > Connections > Bluetooth, then the gear icon next to the device.
After that, put the accessory back into pairing mode and connect again from the phone. Don’t just tap the old device name if it reappears instantly. Start fresh.
This works because Bluetooth pairing stores keys and profile data on both sides. If the phone remembers one version of the pairing and the accessory remembers another, they can look paired while failing to connect properly.
Restart Bluetooth, then restart the phone
For a small glitch, turn Bluetooth off and back on. Use the full settings page rather than only the quick settings tile when the problem keeps coming back.
Pixel and many stock Android phones: Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth.
Samsung: Settings > Connections > Bluetooth.
Xiaomi and POCO: Settings > Bluetooth.
Turn Bluetooth off, wait ten seconds, then turn it back on. If nothing changes, restart the phone. A reboot clears the Bluetooth stack from memory and forces Android to load the radio services again. That’s basic, but it fixes more cases than people expect.
Clear Bluetooth cache only if your phone exposes it
Some Android builds still let you clear cache for the system Bluetooth app. Others don’t expose the option anymore, or only show a storage screen that isn’t useful. That’s normal. Android settings are not identical across Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, and carrier builds.
If your phone has the option, open Settings > Apps, show system apps, find Bluetooth, then open Storage & cache and tap Clear cache. On Samsung, this is usually under Settings > Apps, then the filter or three-dot menu for system apps.
Be careful with Clear storage or Clear data. That can wipe all Bluetooth pairings. Use it only when you are ready to reconnect every device, including watches, cars, hearing aids, earbuds, and keyboards.
If your phone doesn’t offer a Bluetooth cache button, skip this and reset network settings instead.
Reset network settings when the problem is bigger
If Bluetooth is broken across several devices, use Android’s network reset. This clears Bluetooth pairings, saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN settings, and mobile network settings. It doesn’t delete photos, apps, messages, or files.
Pixel and stock Android paths vary by version. Look for Settings > System > Reset options, then choose either Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth or the newer separate reset options for mobile network and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi.
Samsung: Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings.
OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, and other brands move the wording around, so the Settings search box is often faster. Search for reset network.
Do this after you have tried forgetting and re-pairing the accessory. A network reset is useful, but it’s also annoying.
After Android updates, including Android 17
Major Android updates can change Bluetooth behavior because the phone gets a new Bluetooth stack, new profile handling, and sometimes updated codec behavior. Android 17 started rolling out first to supported Pixel phones in June 2026, with other Android makers following on their own schedules. That means update-related Bluetooth problems won’t hit every brand at the same time.
If Bluetooth broke right after Android 17 on a Pixel, don’t assume the accessory suddenly died. Try this order:
- Forget and re-pair the accessory.
- Restart the phone and the accessory.
- Check for another system update under
Settings > System > Software update. - Check whether the accessory has its own firmware update in its companion app.
- Reset network settings if several Bluetooth devices are affected.
For cars, delete the phone from the car’s Bluetooth menu too. Car head units store pairing data just like phones do, and old car software can be picky after a phone OS update. Pairing again only from the phone side is not always enough.
When audio connects but sounds wrong
If Bluetooth audio connects but cuts out, sounds distorted, or has a delay, the connection itself may be fine and the codec may be the problem.
Android supports several Bluetooth audio codecs depending on the phone and accessory: SBC, AAC, aptX variants, LDAC, and LC3 for Bluetooth LE Audio. Not every phone supports every codec. Not every earbud uses the codec printed on the box in every mode.
To test this, enable Developer options by going to Settings > About phone and tapping Build number seven times. Then open Settings > System > Developer options > Bluetooth audio codec. Try SBC first. It isn’t the prettiest codec, but it’s the compatibility baseline.
If SBC works and LDAC or aptX drops audio, you have a codec or signal stability problem rather than a basic pairing problem. Lowering LDAC quality in the headphone app can also help because high-bitrate Bluetooth audio is less forgiving when the signal is weak.
No, this doesn’t mean you should leave Developer options open forever. Change one thing, test it, then put the setting back if it doesn’t help.
Interference is easy to miss
Bluetooth uses the 2.4 GHz band, the same crowded part of the spectrum used by 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, many wireless keyboards, baby monitors, some USB 3.0 setups, and microwave ovens. Bluetooth has tools to work around interference, but it isn’t magic.
If audio only cuts out at your desk, in one room, or in one car, the location is the clue. Move the phone closer to the accessory, take it out of a pocket, and move it away from laptops, hubs, and routers. If your router supports it, use 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi for the phone instead of 2.4 GHz. That reduces crowding around Bluetooth.
This is why earbuds can work perfectly outside and then fail in a gym or train station. The accessory didn’t change. The radio environment did.
Multiple devices can compete
Android can remember many Bluetooth devices, and a long saved-device list isn’t a problem by itself. Active connections are different.
A smartwatch, earbuds, car audio, a fitness sensor, and a laptop nearby can all compete for attention. Some accessories handle multipoint connections well. Others are fussy. Budget earbuds are often worse here than flagship earbuds because their firmware has fewer connection recovery tricks.
Disconnect anything you are not using. If the problem disappears when only one Bluetooth device is active, you have found the pattern.
Use Safe Mode to rule out apps
A third-party app can interfere with Bluetooth, especially automation apps, firewall apps, VPN apps, audio routing tools, battery savers, and companion apps for wearables or earbuds.
To test this, boot into Safe Mode. On many Android phones, hold the power button, then long-press Power off until the Safe Mode prompt appears. Samsung and some other brands use slightly different button timing.
Safe Mode disables downloaded apps. If Bluetooth works there, the phone hardware is probably fine. Restart normally, then look at recently installed or recently updated apps.
When hardware is the likely answer
Test both sides before blaming the phone.
Pair the accessory with another phone. Then pair the problem phone with a different Bluetooth device. If the accessory fails everywhere, the accessory is the issue. If the phone fails with every Bluetooth device, the phone is the issue.
Drops and water exposure can damage antennas or internal connectors. A factory reset is the last software test, not the first one. If Bluetooth stays dead after a reset and every accessory fails, the phone needs repair.
Car calls work but music doesn’t
Calls and music use different Bluetooth profiles. Calls use a hands-free profile. Music uses media audio, usually A2DP or a newer audio path depending on the device.
Open the Bluetooth settings for the car and check the toggles for Phone calls and Media audio. If media audio won’t stay on, forget the car on the phone, delete the phone from the car, restart both, and pair again.
That’s it. That’s the whole car trick most of the time.
