Why your phone slows down after updates
Why Android phones can feel slow after updates, when it is normal, and what to do if performance does not recover.
Your phone can feel worse right after an Android update, and that does not automatically mean the update broke it. The first day or two after a major version upgrade is often messy because Android is rebuilding things in the background while you are trying to use the phone normally.
That is annoying, but it is also normal.
The part that matters is the timeline. A phone that feels warm, drains faster, and stutters for the first 24 to 48 hours is usually still settling. A phone that still feels sluggish after a week needs a closer look.
The first two days are messy
An Android update is more than a new coat of paint. After the install, the system has to finish a lot of maintenance work: optimize app code, rebuild temporary files, re-index media, refresh databases, and let background services settle into the new version.
App optimization is the part most people notice. Android Runtime, or ART, uses profile-guided compilation so apps can start and run faster after the system has learned enough about them. After a system update, some compiled artifacts can become stale and need to be rebuilt. On a Pixel 9 Pro this may barely register. On a four-year-old mid-range phone with eMMC storage and 4 GB of RAM, it can make the phone feel tired for a while.
Storage matters too. If you have 35,000 photos, years of WhatsApp media, offline Spotify downloads, and a nearly full Downloads folder, the phone has more work to scan and index. The user interface can still open, but the storage chip is busy. That is when you get the classic post-update feeling: the keyboard lags, the app switcher hesitates, and the phone gets warm while doing nothing obvious.
Try not to keep restarting it during this phase. One restart after the update is fine. Restarting over and over because it feels slow can delay the work, especially if background optimization was waiting for the phone to be idle and charging.
Android 17 changes the timing a bit
Android 17 has now reached stable release. Google released it on 16 June 2026 and made it available first on most supported Pixel devices. Other manufacturers will follow on their own schedules, usually after they adapt Android 17 to Samsung One UI, Xiaomi HyperOS, OnePlus OxygenOS, or whatever skin they ship.
That matters because update advice depends on what kind of update you are getting. A Pixel owner installing Android 17 in June 2026 is getting the first stable rollout. A Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, or OnePlus owner may get Android 17 later, with manufacturer changes layered on top. Those builds can behave differently even when the Android version number is the same.
Android 17 also tightens parts of app memory behavior. The goal is good: stop one badly behaved app from dragging down the whole phone. The catch is that old or poorly optimized apps may expose problems right after the upgrade. If an app starts crashing, reloading, or burning battery after Android 17, the app may need an update from its developer rather than another phone reboot.
When slow is no longer normal
After 48 hours, the easy explanation starts getting weaker. After a week, it is usually something specific.
Low storage is the first thing to check. Android needs working room for app data, temporary files, caches, logs, downloads, and database updates. A phone sitting at 92% full was already under pressure before the update. The new system files and app updates can push it over the edge. I would treat 15% free storage as the practical target. Less than 10% free is asking for stutters.
RAM is the second pressure point. Phones with 4 GB of RAM can still be usable, but they do not have much room for modern apps, camera processing, browsers, maps, and background services at the same time. On a 4 GB phone, the system may close background apps more often after a major update. That makes multitasking feel worse because apps reload instead of resuming.
App compatibility is another common cause. Some apps are not ready on day one of a new Android version. They may hold wake locks too long, request background work in a way the new system restricts, or hit a changed permission rule. Social apps, VPNs, launchers, automation tools, cleaner apps, and apps using accessibility permissions are worth checking first.
Battery behavior can also look bad for a few days. Adaptive Battery and other system prediction features need time to re-learn your habits. The phone may allow more background activity than usual until it figures out which apps you actually use and which ones can be restricted. This usually settles within several days.
And yes, update bugs happen. Early major releases are better than they used to be, but they are not magic. If many people with the same model report the same problem after the same update, wait for the next patch instead of wiping the phone immediately.
What to do first
Start with the boring fixes. They work more often than the clever ones.
Charge the phone overnight after a major update. Leave it on Wi-Fi. Do not force-close system apps, do not keep rebooting, and do not install five cleaner apps because the phone feels warm. Let Android finish its maintenance window.
After 48 hours, restart once. Then check storage. If the phone is nearly full, delete large videos, old downloads, duplicate media, offline playlists, and apps you do not use. If you can get back to at least 15% free space, do that before changing deeper settings.
Open Google Play and update all apps. Then check Settings > Battery > Battery usage. The exact path varies by manufacturer, but the idea is the same: look for one app using far more battery than normal. If one app is clearly misbehaving, clear that app’s cache, update it, restrict its battery usage, or uninstall it for a day to test.
If the whole phone feels unstable, boot into Safe Mode. Safe Mode disables third-party apps without deleting them. If the phone runs fine there, the update is probably not the direct cause. One of your installed apps is.
On Samsung phones and some older Android devices, wiping the cache partition can still help after a large update. Use it only if the option exists in Recovery Mode. Many newer devices either hide it or manage those caches automatically.
Make it feel faster while you troubleshoot
Reducing animations will not make the processor faster. It makes the phone feel faster because Android spends less time showing transition effects.
Unlock Developer Options by tapping Build Number seven times, then set Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale to 0.5x. I would not turn them all off first. Instant screen changes can feel harsh, and 0.5x gives most of the benefit without making the interface feel broken.
You can also use the accessibility route on many phones. Look under Settings > Accessibility for Remove animations, Reduce animations, or a similar motion setting. That is safer if a banking app or work security policy does not like Developer Options being enabled.
This is a perception fix, not a cure. If apps take six seconds to open because the phone is out of storage, animation settings will only hide part of the delay.
When the slowdown is permanent
Sometimes the honest answer is that the phone is old for the software it is now running. A budget phone that shipped with Android 12 and 4 GB of RAM may receive Android 15, Android 16, or Android 17 later in its life, but the hardware did not get faster.
That does not mean the update was pointless. Security patches matter. New Android versions can improve privacy, compatibility, and system behavior. But there is a real cost when newer software lands on old storage, limited RAM, and a battery that has already lost capacity.
If the phone was already struggling before the update, do not expect a major OS upgrade to save it. Free up storage, remove problem apps, reduce animations, and use lighter apps where possible. If basic tasks still lag after that, the next real fix may be replacing the device.

Common questions
Should I delay Android updates?
Install monthly security updates promptly. They fix vulnerabilities.
Major Android version upgrades are different. If your phone is mission-critical and the update has just started rolling out, waiting a couple of weeks is reasonable. Pixel devices got Android 17 first in June 2026, while other brands will ship their versions later. Early reports from people with the same model are useful.
Can I downgrade if the update is bad?
Usually no, at least not in a normal supported way. Some Pixel and OnePlus devices can be flashed manually, but that often requires unlocking the bootloader, wipes the phone, and may have warranty or security tradeoffs. For most people, waiting for a patch is safer.
Does clearing app cache help?
For one misbehaving app, yes. Go to Settings > Apps > [app name] > Storage > Clear cache. For whole-phone slowness, clearing every app cache is usually temporary. Android will rebuild most of it.
Why is battery drain worse after an update?
Background optimization, app updates, media indexing, and re-learned battery habits can all raise drain for a few days. If drain is still bad after a week, check battery usage by app and test Safe Mode.
